Apprentice Laboratory Technician

You will be working alongside a mentor in a small team and assist with the safe, efficient, and reliable laboratory operation.  

The Apprentice Laboratory Technician will work within the Technical team to support the day to day laboratory operations through equipment maintenance, equipment calibration, routine testing, sample preparation and sample management. This is to be completed within a certified  Laboratory, requiring safe, timely task completion with a high standard of house keeping.

You will develop technical knowledge of scientific methods and techniques to accurately document and support the laboratory tests and tasks.

You will learn to follow risk assessments, work safely in a laboratory, follow procedures, perform tasks, use specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment, record accurate data, interpret results, and understand the legal requirements for your industry, i.e., HASWA, COSHH, DSEAR.

Our goal is to work with you, developing your lab skills and knowledge, so that you become competent in laboratory housekeeping, analytical support tasks and sample analysis. This may also be extended to test methods and in operating key pieces of equipment.

Responsibilities may include:

·         Sample Management

Laboratory Technicians are expected to work both individually and as part of a team, taking responsibility for the quality and accuracy of their work. You must work safely, to legislation and codes of practice, and follow quality procedures to meet the quality standards relevant to your work.

In addition to technical competence, you’ll also learn the importance of effective communication with different stakeholders. The programme aims to instil strong values of teamwork, time management and commitment to professional development.

Your training

At Tiro we’re obsessed with changing lives through science and technology apprenticeships so we can’t wait to have you on board.

Over 24 months, you’ll devote a minimum of 6 hours of your working week on ‘off the job’ training. This can include theory training (for example, virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring, & time spent writing assignments. The apprenticeship programme will be delivered remotely/ in the workplace - theory sessions delivered by the training provider on-line, the apprentice will undertake tasks/roles within the workplace to demonstrate skills, knowledge, and behaviours. This will be supported by an experienced mentor/supervisor/line manager.

You will also be supported by a dedicated learning coach/assessor who will guide and mentor you throughout your apprenticeship.

You will undertake the Level 3 Laboratory Technician programme, this consists of:

·         Work safely in a laboratory, maintaining excellent housekeeping whilst following appropriate safety, environment, and risk management systems.

·         Follow quality procedures to meet the requirements of quality standards relevant to the workplace.

·         Prepare laboratory tasks using the appropriate scientific techniques, procedures, and methods.

·         Perform laboratory tasks following specified methodologies, such as Standard Operating Procedures.

·         Use of specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment, including calibration where required.

·         Produce reliable, accurate data and keep accurate records of laboratory work undertaken and results.

·         Analyse, interpret and evaluate data and identify results requiring further investigation seeking advice of senior colleagues as appropriate.

·         Communicate scientific information appropriately, including the use of laboratory information management systems, either digital or paper based. 

·         Apply scientific techniques for data presentation, e.g., statistics.

·         Recognise problems and apply appropriate scientific methods to identify causes and achieve solutions.

·         Participate in continuous business performance improvement.

·         Successful achievement of the end-point assessment will lead to final certification of the apprenticeship.

·         Added value includes once qualified you’ll be eligible to join the Register of Science Technicians (RSciTech).
