  • Preparing the learning environment - Setting up play areas, organising resources, and ensuring classrooms, toys, and learning materials are ready before children arrive.
  • Welcoming families - Greeting parents and children, supporting smooth drop‑off routines, taking attendance, and noting any daily instructions from guardians.
  • Supporting planned activities - Assisting with arts, crafts, music, storytelling, and other structured sessions that promote early language, creativity, and motor skill development.
  • Supervising outdoor play - Monitoring children closely on outdoor equipment, encouraging safe exploration, and maintaining a secure play environment.
  • Promoting social development - Helping children learn to share, cooperate, take turns, and resolve minor conflicts calmly and respectfully.
  • Guiding small groups - Supporting small groups during independent play or simple structured learning activities, ensuring engagement and inclusion.
  • Assisting at mealtimes - Helping younger children feed themselves, encouraging healthy eating habits, and maintaining a calm, positive mealtime routine.
  • Nappy changing and toileting support - Providing safe, respectful care during nappy changes and supporting children with toilet training in line with safeguarding and hygiene standards.
  • Promoting good hygiene - Encouraging regular handwashing, especially before meals and after outdoor play, and modelling good hygiene practices.
  • Supporting rest and nap times - Setting up sleep mats or cots, helping children settle, and maintaining a calm environment during scheduled rest periods.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and safety - Disinfecting toys, tables, and high‑use equipment throughout the day, and completing end‑of‑day cleaning tasks such as sweeping, vacuuming, sorting resources, and preparing the room for the next session.

Your training

You will receive specific on-the-job training from the employer in your workplace. Off-the-job training will be provided by Achievement Training in the following areas:

  • Diploma for the Early Years Practitioner Level 2
  • Apprentices under 19, without level 2 English and maths (A*-C or 9-4 GCSE or equivalents) will need to achieve this level prior to completion of their apprenticeship.

Apprentices must spend 6 hours a week on off-the-job training. This can be flexible and doesn’t have to mean 1 day out of the workplace every week; you can agree a suitable training schedule with the organisation and the tutor. 

Where it leads

With further training, you could:

  • Apply to be a Senior Nursery Worker
  • Become an Early Years Teacher
  • Move into a management position in a nursery
