The apprentice role sits within the Fleet and Equipment Team, supporting the department in the day to day running and maintenance of the fleet. They will be working alongside all members of the team, learning how to diagnose and repair faults on all of the fleet assets.

  • Carry out routine maintenance, repairs and servicing of appliances, light vehicles, pumps and equipment
  • Attend breakdowns on/off site to repair vehicles and equipment
  • Update records of all the assets on the fleet
  • Installation and maintenance of radio & and comms equipment
  • Undertaking fabrication work to adapt/repair vehicles
  • Supporting other team members in their roles
  • Maintaining and updating training records
  • Maintaining and keeping the workshops tidy

The day-to-day contact will be with your mentor and the Workshop Manager.

Your training

1 day a week at Peterborough College plus an additional bi-monthly workshop portfolio session.

The successful candidate will gain a valuable insight into the workings of Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Fleet and Equipment department to enable them to apply for a role within the Team on completion.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) is the statutory fire and rescue service responsible for protecting the communities of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, serving a population of around 700,000 people. Its headquarters are located at Hinchingbrooke Cottage, Huntingdon.

The service operates 27 fire stations across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

CFRS maintains specialist resources to deal with:

  • Water and flood incidents
  • Complex road traffic collisions
  • Hazardous materials incidents
  • Large-scale emergencies and resilience events

Cambridge Fleet and Equipment Services – maintain, service, purchase, and repair all the Fleet assets. We have 9 people in the team, working from our workshops at Dogsthorpe. The workshops are equipped with tools and ramps/ vehicle lifts to work on all the equipment. We have 4 work bays and 2 equipment repair workshops.

Things to consider

Due to the nature of the role working on HGV’s, any candidates will need to be physically fit and comfortable working in a workshop environment.
