Your apprenticeship will take you from the basics of welding and fabrication through to working on real engineering projects.
You’ll learn to:
- Prepare, clean, grind and mark out materials ready for fabrication
- Read engineering drawings and welding symbols
- Set up welding equipment safely
- Learn MIG and TIG welding techniques
- Weld mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and brass
- Build components and fan cases using jigs, tools and fixtures
- Tack and weld components accurately
- Learn how to control heat to prevent distortion and warping
- Check your welds and identify defects
- Work to welding procedures and engineering specifications
- Complete quality checks and production records
As your skills develop, you’ll progress from supervised practice work to more advanced welding, including flat, vertical and overhead positions.
You’ll also learn why a weld has gone wrong, not just how to fix it. That’s where good welders become great engineers.
Your training
From your first day, you’ll be employed and paid while gaining practical experience and working towards your apprenticeship qualification.
You’ll receive:
- Level 2 Engineering Operative apprenticeship
- Minimum 300 hours of off-the-job training delivered by Train’d Up
- Full training and qualification costs paid by RHF Fans
- A named workplace mentor
- Regular progress reviews
- PPE and tools provided
- Structured supervision as you develop your skills
- Hands-on experience across the fabrication department
- You’ll also work towards your English and maths requirements as part of the apprenticeship where needed
Where it leads
This apprenticeship is your starting point.
With experience and further development, you could progress into roles such as:
Welder → Welder / Fabricator → Senior Welder / Fabricator → Welding Specialist → Fabrication Supervisor.
You could also develop your skills into wider engineering and manufacturing roles.
The aim is simple: help you build the skills to become a qualified engineer and a valuable member of the RHF Fans team.
A permanent Welder / Fabricator position is available on successful completion of the apprenticeship, subject to business need.

Things to consider
Safety comes first.
You’ll be working around machinery, tools and materials, so safety is part of everything you do.
You’ll receive the appropriate PPE, training and supervision before operating equipment or carrying out tasks independently.
Manual handling training is also provided, with lifting and handling limits based on the relevant risk assessments.
